I have been a Florida Gators football fan as long as I can remember. Then, I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Florida. Yet, somehow I found myself falling in love with and marrying a Georgia Bulldog! Here is how we plan to survive in a Florida Georgia house divided!
The first year my husband and I were just dating, I went to the Florida Georgia football game in Jacksonville, Florida, also known as the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. My sweet then-boyfriend offered to dog-sit for me so my precious pooch wouldn’t have to go to a kennel.
Somehow, he and a buddy thought it would be funny to put a Georgia jersey on my dog and text me a picture. This, of course, as my Florida Gators proceeded to get beat by his Bulldogs. I really thought twice about breaking up with him that weekend! (Yes, that is how much I love football.)
Needless to say, cooler heads prevailed, and we made it work. The next year, we had been married and our son was just a few weeks old!
But, then my Florida Gators proceeded to ruin my hubby’s Georgia Bulldogs’ SEC championship hopes by beating them – soundly, I might add – when no one thought the Gators had a chance to even keep it close. I kept my mouth shut and just enjoyed the game, but my husband was in a very foul mood that weekend!
We decided from there on out we would not be watching that particular game together.
This year, we made a pact. Since Halloween is the same day as our rivalry game, we agreed to not watch the game at all. Instead, we will focus on neighborhood Halloween festivities and taking our son trick-or-treating for the first time! And, regardless of who wins or loses, we will not speak to each other about the game or its outcome.
The plus side is that both of our teams have a shot at going to the SEC championship this year. And, I was fortunate enough to get tickets to the championship game.
As hard as it is to believe, we both do our best to cheer on the other’s team, even through our bitter rivalry. So, regardless of which team makes it, we have agreed to go to the game together and support the other, no matter what.
If you’d asked me three years ago if it were possible to not only love but marry a fan of the Gators’ bitter rival, I’d have laughed you out of my house. But, there’s only one man who’s made me hate the Dawgs a little less, and that’s my husband. I don’t know how it happened. But it did.
I’m truly hopeful this all works out well! I’ll keep you posted. And hopefully come December we will post some fun pictures from the SEC championship!
