For a long time, I always leased cars. It allowed me to have a new and often very nice vehicle at a monthly payment I could afford. Further, not knowing much about cars, I didn’t want unexpected mechanical issues leaving me at the mercy of a car repair shop.
Fortunately, my husband is a pretty skilled gear head. So, when my last lease was coming to an end this year, we decided to purchase another vehicle. My husband also – very generously – sacrificed by driving a super-old car we bought from his dad so that I could drive a used Honda Pilot, which was great for hauling a baby around!
Don’t get me wrong – it is definitely an adjustment going from driving new vehicles with all the latest bells and whistles to a used vehicle that’s 5+ years old. The Pilot we bought is a 2008 and has about 80,000 miles on her.
But it’s made me appreciate more having a husband who is knowledgeable enough that we can buy a used car and not worry too much if something goes wrong (other than how to pay for it, of course). But one day, we will pay off our used cars and – we hope anyway – go without car payments for awhile.
In fact, we are hopeful that the cars we have now will last us each another 100,000 miles or more! My husband diligently checks on the preventive maintenance regularly to ensure we get the most life out of our vehicles.
And, since I’m driving up to Tennessee to visit family, I am especially grateful for reliable transportation today!
