I have a great deal of experience in media relations, particularly for higher education. View various samples of news releases and other media relations activities here.
University of West Florida
At the University of West Florida in Pensacola, I served as the university spokeswoman for a full year, during which time I managed media relations for the following situations and crises:
- The announcement of the addition of football to the university athletics programs
- Tropical weather and university closures
- An individual believed to be missing in the area whose vehicle was located on campus near walking trails. During the investigation, I led daily communication strategy for both internal and external audiences and facilitated media interviews. This also required frequent communication with both UWF police and Escambia County law enforcement.
- A small chemical explosion and fire in the chemistry laboratories in which two students received minor injuries and the building was evacuated. Classes were cancelled for a brief period of time. This situation required constant communication with the provost’s and dean of students’ offices, as well as with current students and the media.
At Rollins College, one of my first projects included managing media relations for a student’s Guinness World record attempt to complete the most consecutive hours on air at the student-run radio station WPRK.
A student DJ completed 110 consecutive hours on the air, and his world-record attempt received tons of media attention, including interviews with or features in USA Today, The Daily Buzz, The Howard Stern Show and numerous other local, regional and national media.
The Orlando Sentinel captured an excellent synopsis of the marathon.
